How to Download Subtitles from YouTube (Free, No Software)

You don't need YouTube Premium, a browser extension, or a sketchy download site to get the subtitles of a YouTube video. Almost every video has captions, either uploaded by the creator or auto-generated. Grabbing them as a proper SRT or VTT file takes about ten seconds. Here's how.

The fastest way: paste the URL into a downloader

The simplest method works in any browser, on any device, with nothing installed:

1. Open the video on YouTube and copy the URL from the address bar (or from the Share button).
2. Go to our free subtitle downloader.

Which format should you download?

• SRT. The universal standard. Drop it next to your video file (same filename) and VLC, MPV or any player picks it up automatically.

• TXT. Plain text with no timestamps. Handy for reading the transcript, studying a language, or feeding into a translator.

A note about auto-generated captions

Auto captions are produced by YouTube's speech recognition and they're usually pretty good, but not perfect. Names get mangled, and background music can throw them off. What about videos without any captions?
